About Northland

NPLBuilding2

Northland Public Library enables, empowers and encourages lifelong learning and discovery in a safe, welcoming space for all.

Open since 1968, Northland Public Library has nearly 200,000 items in its physical collection including books, magazines, newspapers, DVDs and CDs. Additionally the collection includes access to over 1.8 Million downloadable eBooks, AudioBooks, eMagazines, Videos, and Music. The Library provides programming for people of all ages, as well as a quiet place to study, read and learn.

Northland is the second largest library in Allegheny County. The geographic area served, the population base, collection and circulation are second only to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh in Allegheny County. Our direct service area consists of over 90,000 residents (as of the 2020 Census) spanning 61.15 square miles. Northland is also a member of the Allegheny County Library Association (ACLA) a system of 46 independent public libraries with more than 70 locations that work together, share resources and cooperate to provide a high level of public service to county residents.

The Library receives the majority of its funding from the five municipalities which it directly serves. Please see the Governance & Funding page for more information.

In 2018, Northland Library celebrated 50 years of serving our communities. Here is a timeline of our major milestones.

Northland is a PA Forward Gold Star Library. To learn more about the PA Forward Star Program visit this page.

There are approximately 70 staff members who work in a variety of areas including circulation, reference, technical services and administration. View our organizational chart (link). There are a number of Northland Staff and Board Members serving the consortium, our (NPL’s) communities, and the profession – click here for a list.

We’re pleased to share our 2024 Annual Report, summarizing the impact Northland had on our communities in 2022!

We are proud to share our Strategic Plan for 2021-2024. Special thanks to all of our local community partners and individuals who provided input to help map our path forward.
