Library Sponsored Programs Policy

Mission

Northland Public Library enables, empowers and encourages lifelong learning and discovery in a safe, welcoming space for all.

Vision

Northland will serve as a positive influence on society by ensuring our library is welcoming and inclusive to all.

Guidelines

Northland Public Library (NPL) supports its mission and strategic plan by developing and presenting programs that do one or more of the following:

  • Supplement and extend information found in NPL’s collection;
  • Provide an alternate way for people to obtain and assimilate information;
  • Fulfill NPL’s role as the community connection;
  • Encourage the use of the Library and its resources;
  • Promote early literacy, acquisition of skills and a life-long love of reading and learning;
  • Present information on issues of current or local interest;
  • Foster cultural awareness, diversity, and belonging;
  • Foster civic engagement and discourse;
  • Facilitate the sharing of local talent, knowledge, and expertise.

Selection of program topics, speakers, courses, classes, and resource materials is based on the interests and needs of NPL users and the community. Programs are selected at NPL staff’s discretion and are based on a number of additional factors including but not limited to meeting room availability, topic and cost.

All NPL programs are open to the public, but some programs may be designed with specific audiences in mind (e.g., children’s programs, seniors’ programs and parenting programs). Library sponsored programming utilizes NPL staff, materials and resources and may involve cooperative programming with individuals, agencies, organizations and educational institutions. Registration for programs may be required for planning purposes or when space is limited. Registration lists are confidential. Fees may be levied for certain programs to provide materials needed. Programs may occur on site, virtually or in other locations. Any sale of products at Library sponsored programs must be approved by NPL and benefit the Library directly or indirectly.

Topics, speakers and resource materials are not excluded from Library sponsored programs because of possible controversy. Acceptance of a program topic by NPL does not constitute an endorsement by NPL of the group’s or individual’s policies or beliefs. NPL does not conduct programming that is primarily commercial or sectarian in nature. Patrons who have concerns, questions or complaints about the content of Library sponsored programs are encouraged to discuss them with the sponsoring department’s manager. If the patron is not satisfied with the response to their concerns, and the patron lives in one of NPL’s five supporting municipalities, the manager will provide the patron with a form to request formal reconsideration of the Library resource. The request will be reviewed by a committee of library professionals who will make a recommendation to the Executive Director. The Executive Director will notify the patron of their decision.
