Job Description – Shelver

Job Description: Shelver

The Shelver is a part-time, non-exempt position and reports to the Circulation Supervisors. The Shelver maintains order in the collections by shelving materials in their appropriate locations, shelf-reading, inspecting, sorting, book pick-up, searching, etc. and directing patrons to appropriate collections and staff as requested.

Primary Accountabilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Shelving materials in correct locations;
  • Bringing materials in poor condition to the attention of the proper staff;
  • Printing a list of materials requested by patrons and pulling those items from the shelves;
  • Shelf-reading to ensure that materials are in alphanumeric order;
  • Retrieving and discarding litter and unshelved materials from stack areas, etc.;
  • Emptying and checking in materials from return bins, as assigned;
  • Providing daily count for in-house use of materials;
  • Working positively and collaboratively within the Circulation Department and across all Departments in support of Library goals;
  • Providing the best possible customer service to the public including assisting patrons with directional questions;
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work independently and/or with minimal supervision on assigned tasks and willingness to learn new tasks;
  • Ability to spend long periods standing, walking, doing moderate lifting up to 35 pounds and pushing carts that weigh up to 150 pounds;
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and common sense in evaluating situations and making decisions;
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to sort accurately both alphabetically and numerically;
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive relations with a diverse community including department team members, other staff and patrons;
  • Ability to operate office and computer equipment and technology including computers and various software platforms, printers, and copiers, etc.

Education and Experience

  • Must be at least l6 years of age at time of application;
  • The ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance;
  • Desire to learn new skills, including the ability to learn the Dewey Decimal Classification library book shelving system and sort/file materials alphabetically.

Library Hours

Regular Hours 

  • Sunday: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Monday – Thursday: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Friday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
