The Cleaning/Maintenance Assistant is a non-exempt position which reports to the Director of Finance & Support Services and involves performing custodial and maintenance services. Custodial work includes cleaning floors, furniture, windows, restrooms and removing trash. This person provides a comprehensive program of maintenance services including preventative maintenance and light repair of custodial equipment, and keeps track of supplies.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Performing preventive and corrective maintenance on library building and all equipment;
- Painting interior walls and miscellaneous components;
- Operating vehicles, power equipment, and hand tools;
- Performing custodial work including but is not limited to sweeping, mopping, buffing floors; vacuuming carpets; dusting and cleaning furniture, shelves and equipment; washing windows; cleaning and supplying restrooms; removing trash;
- Cleaning snow and debris from sidewalks and stairs;
- Mowing lawn, trimming shrubbery and similar landscaping activities;
- Monitoring Library security, safety and health conditions;
- Moving and transporting furniture, equipment, supplies, books, etc.;
- Maintaining order and cleanliness of storage areas;
- Providing preventative maintenance, cleaning, and light repair of custodial equipment on a regular basis;
- Monitoring inventory of custodial supplies;
- Assisting with book sales;
- Assisting with maintenance of building security;
- Performing job safely in accordance with Library safety procedures;
- Attending, virtually or in-person, seminars, conferences, workshops, classes and/or webinars to enhance and maintain knowledge of safety and other library-related topics;
- Assisting with community events;
- Demonstrating continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times and streamline work processes;
- Working cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service;
- Assisting staff with enforcing library policies for patron behavior, participating in disaster and emergency procedures, completing Incident Reports and calling police or other official assistance, when necessary.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to learn and use the Library’s custodial and maintenance equipment, materials, repair tools, computer, and office equipment;
- Ability to work under minimum supervision;
- Ability to follow emergency procedures to provide security for the Library, patrons and staff;
- Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism and customer service while enforcing the Library’s Rules of Conduct, while working in public areas, and when confronted by aggressive or challenging patrons;
- Ability to handle confidential information with integrity;
- Ability to prioritize multiple activities and/or interruptions and to work positively and effectively within a team model;
- Ability to develop and maintain positive relations with a diverse community including department team members, other staff, Library management, board members and patrons;
- Ability to operate office and computer equipment and technology including computers and various software platforms including e-mail, printers, and copiers, etc.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- Vocational, technical, or trade school training in building trades and experience in general building maintenance and repair helpful.
