1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
This is a new library program that encourages all families and caregivers to read 1,000 Books with their young children before they enter kindergarten. Learn more about Northland’s program here: Northland’s 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
Studies have shown that families who start reading aloud to their children at birth help to strengthen their vocabulary – an important tool for beginning to learn to read when they enter kindergarten. Find out more at: http://1000booksbeforekindergarten.org/
Take Home Science in a Box
Did you ever wonder why or how some things happen? Try one of Northland’s new “Take Home Science in a Box,” kits. These hands-on experiments will let you become the expert. All of the experiments have been tested by staff for safety and accuracy. You may have to provide some of the ingredients, but they are generally found around your house.
Stop by the children’s/young adult reference desk for more information and to check out these science kits. Each kit circulates for one week. For a list of all the Take Home Science Kits we have available and to keep track of the ones you have tried print this form at home or stop by the children’s/young adult reference desk for a copy.
Note: Northland Library’s Take Home Science in a Box is only available to children age 5 years and older. Kits must be checked out at and returned to the children’s/young adult reference desk. There is a $10 replacement fee for science kits not returned. This project is supported by a grant from the Bentley Corporation.
American Girl Doll Lending Collection
Did you know that you may invite a real American Girl Doll into your home for a very special visit?
Northland Library has nine American Girls packed and waiting for a visit with you. Each doll comes in a carrying case that includes a wardrobe of her own clothing, a book telling her story and even a journal for you to write memories of your time with her.
Please ask the children’s/young adult reference desk if you are interested in hosting a doll for one week.
Please note that dolls are lent on a first come, first served basis and we are not able to take reservations or requests. Lending of the dolls is subject to availability.
These dolls are available to children age 6 years and older who are residents of the five municipalities which directly support Northland Public Library with tax dollars. The Borough of Bradford Woods, Franklin Park Borough, Marshall Township, the Town of McCandless and Ross Township.
Meet RC (Reading Creature) is the friendly face of youth services in Allegheny County Libraries.
Why does RC have such a big brain? From reading and listening to the thousands of books from his library, of course! Learn more about RC at: www.RCsclubhouse.org
